Let's all stand and give La Cieca a rousing welcome to Stuttgart. She's currently on "tour" writing for Rough and Regie (I think) and stops by tomorrow for a looky loo into the Bieito Parsifal. One of the comments I've read time and time again on some blogs is a request to see this strange production. I imagine the Parterre Faithful will get an earful about it soon enough.Meanwhile, they handed me a lovely DVD to study off of. I hate watching archival movies of past productions. Even when I say I'm going to watch it and study it, when arriving to a short rehearsal period, I'm lying. I just can make myself do it. Always taped with your grandmother's crappy camera at the back of the theater. With barely any audio. But, holy mackeral. They gave me a treasure. The thing was taped with 5 cameras complete with closeups. In practically movie quality.
I have to think it will mysteriously appear on YouTube quite soon.
Just saying…
It's a good thing I've got it to study off of. I believe I have fully captured the essense of James T. Kirk in it though. It makes me giggle. There is so much "play" to it from everyone. I've never seen anything like it. No wonder other tenors balked when they were assigned this regie. It is truly insane. And I understand they shock that it inspired on its opening.
My wife actually preferred it to the Brussels. There is more development into relationships and storytelling. It is monstrously intense, so a big challenge to do. I'll let you know how I feel about doing it tomorrow night. I'm sort of storing up. I remember I was going to the gym 5 times a week just to get through it.
And I haven't been to the gym since. (whimper)

How complete is this video? I have a lot of “historic” performance DVDs in my collection with less than perfect camera work and varying audio quality that I simply treasure because of the unique production and/or performances. It is almost too bad that we now expect DVDs of performances to be “movie quality”. I for one would pay $25 to $50 for less than perfect DVDs of more recent productions.
Having attended the Bieito Parsifal last year and counting it in one of the highlights of my opera going experience, I would love to have a video of the production, cleaned up perfectly or not.
I agree with Suzanne - I think it's far more important to have a video record - even if imperfect - of so important a production. Of course I say that with twice the conviction that my Stuttgart plans got nixed!
Parterre revealed a fine review today by Dawn Fatale(!) with a number of interesting comments following.
